How to Determine Your Body Shape: A Simple 2 Step Guide

As a personal stylist, when I ask my clients “What is stopping you from looking your personal best?”, 90% of my clients tell me that they don’t know how to dress for their body. Knowing your body shape is the key to dressing your body. If you don’t know your body shape, you won’t know what looks good on you and what doesn’t. As a result, you will end up with a wardrobe full of clothes that just look great on the hanger but not on you, and you can’t figure out why! Today I am going to tell you the Stylist’s secret on how I determine my client’s body shape so that you can find out yours! Let’s get started.

Step 1: Measure Yourself

To get the most accurate measurements, strip down to your underwear and a camisole. Standing in front of a mirror also helps to ensure you are measuring the correct portion of your body. Let’s get that handy tape measure and get measuring!

  • Bust: Measure around the fullest portion of your bust. It’s usually the area that levels at your nipples. Keep the tape snug but don’t pull it so tight that you are squeezing your chest. Note down the measurement.
  • Waist: Measure around the thinnest part of your waist. It’s usually the area 1-2 inches below your breasts. Note down the measurement
  • Hips: Measure around the widest part of your hips. It’s usually around the level of your crotch. Note down the measurement.

Step 2: Determine Your Body Shape

Now that you have your measurements handy, let’s use them to determine your body shape.

Triangle

Your body shape is considered Triangle (also known as pear) if your hip measurement is greater than your bust measurement. Confirm by checking the numbers, hips ÷ bust ≥ 1.05.

For example, you are a Triangle body shape if your bust is 36 inches and your hips are 37.75 inches or larger.

Inverted Triangle

Your body shape is considered an Inverted Triangle if your bust measurement is greater than your hip measurement. Confirm by checking the numbers, bust ÷ hips ≥ 1.05.

For example, you are an Inverted Triangle body shape if your hip measurement is 36 inches and your bust are 37.75 inches or larger.

Rectangle

Your body shape is considered a Rectangle if your bust and hip measurements are within 5 percent of each other. Your waist is less than 25 percent smaller than your bust measurements. Confirm by checking numbers, bust ÷ hips ≥ 0.95 AND waist ÷ bust ≥ 0.75.

For example, you are a Rectangle body shape if your bust measures 36 inches, your waist will be 27 inches or more AND your hip measures between 34 to 38 inches.

Hourglass

Your body shape is considered an Hourglass if your waist is at least 25 percent smaller than your bust AND hips measurements. Confirm by checking numbers, waist ÷ hip ≥ 0.75 AND waist ÷ bust ≥ 0.75.

For example, you are an Hourglass body shape if your bust and hips measure 36 inches, and your waist is 27 inches or smaller.

Diamond

Your body shape is considered a Diamond if your waist measurement is greater than your hip AND bust measurements. Confirm by checking the numbers, waist ÷ bust ≥ 1.05 AND waist ÷ hips ≥ 1.05.

For example, you are a Diamond body shape if your waist measurement is 36 inches and your bust and hips are 34.2 inches or smaller.

The female body shapes are based on societal standards that are subjective and are different in different cultures. Your body shape may not fit into any of the above shapes and that’s OK.
